As talks fail, Israel-Iran violence may spur nuclear breakout: Analysis

قناة Al Jazeera לפני 21 שעות דווח

Efforts to revive talks on the Iran nuclear deal have repeatedly stalled amid rising regional tensions, with hopes for diplomacy overshadowed by military escalation. Speaking to Al Jazeera, Alan Eyre, a former core member of the US nuclear negotiating team and now a diplomatic fellow at the Middle East Institute, warned that the situation is “very perilous, very troubling.” He said the region is caught in a spiral of violence between Israel and Iran, with Israel exercising escalation dominance by freely targeting Iranian nuclear, military, and energy sites. Eyre explained that while Israel aims to dismantle Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, this is unachievable due to the depth of Iran’s scientific expertise. He suggested Israel may be seeking the US involvement in its campaign and possibly aiming for regime change in Tehran. On Iran’s position, Eyre said its military and diplomatic options are limited, forcing it to retaliate primarily for domestic credibility. He noted Iran is unlikely to inflict significant damage on Israel, while Israel remains defiant of international opinion. Iran’s most viable path, he added, may be to endure the strikes, regroup, and potentially shift towards actively acquiring nuclear weapons. Eyre warned this could include withdrawing from the Non-Proliferation Treaty, stripping the international community of any insight into Iran’s nuclear programme.
