The two-term pro-EU and pro-NATO mayor, who made his name fighting corrupt property developers, said voters were seeking “profound change, functioning state institutions, less corruption, a prosperous economy and a society of dialogue”. Simion conceded early on Monday, after earlier claiming he had won. “We may have lost a battle, but we will certainly not lose the war,” he posted on X. While Dan’s win is considered a shock upset after weeks trailing behind Simion in the polls, the far right made gains in elections in Portugal and Poland. The pro-European centrist Warsaw mayor, Rafał Trzaskowski, and the historian Karol Nawrocki, who is backed by the populist right, each secured about 30% of the vote in a nail-bitingly close first round of the Polish presidential election.
